“The Power Within
The Power Beyond”
Curated by Akansha Wadhwani
O Womaniya
Someone once said “I raise up my voice—not so that I can shout, but so that those without a voice can be heard. We cannot all succeed when half of us are held back.” This art exhibition dares to celebrate the individuality, ambitions, perfections and imperfections of every such woman of the country and the world. Make no mistake, the artworks depict her struggle, her challenges and her endurance across the various walks of life as she marches on in this beautiful journey called life emphasising on self-love and self-care. When the social prejudices proclaimed her to be INVISIBLE, she chose the path to become INVINCIBLE. Our esteemed 13 fellow artists have focused on the celebration of this womanhood through their diversified yet plural artworks.

The Transformation
Conceptualized by Gaurav Kumar
‘’Perhaps more than any other form of art, abstract art has challenged the viewer to understand it.’’
The inception of abstract art occurred with the dangers of war over its head. Various dictionaries define abstraction as ‘freedom from representational qualities in art’ and ‘not representing things pictorially.’ While an artist may have a real object in mind when painting, that object might be stylized, distorted, or exaggerated using colors and textures to communicate a feeling rather than produce a replica. It’s more about how the beauty of shapes and colors can override representational accuracy. Abstraction is a ‘continuum’ that can probably exist in all art to a certain degree.
Indian artists, influenced by doctrine and technique prevalent in western art, began to accept the cultural hegemony of the West. Indian artists developed hybrid modernism with the amalgamation of the Indian tradition (folk, tribal, and tantric) with western modernism.
Nature has always been a significant source of inspiration for artists. The pre-occupation of Indian abstract painters with nature is the essence rather than the appearance of the subject, which shows they are concerned with reality but of a different nature.
This exhibition unravels the romantic language of transformation created by artists Achuthan Kudallur, Dasharth Patel, Kalicharan Gupta, Mahirwan Mamtani, Mahesh Jagtap, Nupur Kundu, Prabhakar Kolte, Sridhar Iyer, Sohan Quadri, and S.K. Sahni where nature is the excitant and evokes artistic intuitions regardless of the realities of the material world.
Prabhakar Kolte’s work subsumes multiple elements together just as each moment bears connection with the past and the future, and yet the reality is a single frame, inside a sole composition. Nupur Kundu’s canvas seems to be an intense color drama unfolding where viewers can perceive the amalgamation of different shades which provide the space and energy to interpret her art in ways that complement their sensibilities. By experimenting with texture, Sohan Qadri discovers innovative values in abstraction. He creates new forms and arranges space in such a way that it becomes a universe in itself, full of texture and color that constitutes a reality unknown in this tangible world, indulging us in utmost spiritual tranquillity. Sridhar Iyer has the transformative power that takes the viewers into another dimension of the art world where nature, spiritualism, and life are harmoniously living on the surface of the canvas. Kalicharan Gupta’s lines and colors justify the visual experience from rural-urban transfiguration and veracious occurrences of urbanity. His recent preoccupation with tribal art and metropolitan cities is a reminder of the times artists have turned towards simpler forms of folk and tribal art for inspiration. In the works of Mahesh Jagtap, color plays a dominant role on the canvas. It gives a sense of touch to the viewers, whereas in Achutham Kudallur’s works we see a quality of ‘mystiques’ and ‘pure abstracts’ which transfer the viewers to the circle of continuity and philosophical ponderings.
Part of the exhibition is the multidisciplinary artist Dashrath Patel’s work whose brilliance is widely unrecognized. His diverse works join the common thread of creativity which reflects in his explorations of form, shadow, light, and movement.
Tantrism serves as the inspiration of several artists grouped under the category of Neo-Tantrism thus we have Mahirwan Mamtani and SK Sahni who search for the spiritual dimensions within contemporary art. The goal of these artworks is to come into direct experience of pure abstractions. However skillful, these works did not necessarily portray a direct tantric experience of the artist.
The exhibition also includes sculptor(s) Anil Kumar and Virender Singh, whose works express nature through abstraction.
For many of these artists, nature had become a source of inspiration to create these vividly colored images. This bend towards abstraction draws on observed reality to make conscious and unconscious imagery. Their rejection of stylistic categorization is apparent yet we see two basic inclinations: one that emphasized energetic and dynamic gestures and one that preferred a reflective, cerebral focus with more open fields of color. In both cases, the imagery is abstract even when depicting visual realities.
